Edgar Wright & Jump Cut Editing

Wright is an English filmmaker and is mostly known for his fast-paced, kinetic, satirical genre films. He has directed some very well known films such as Marvel's 'Ant Man'.

Featured in most of this directors work is the style of jump cut editing. Jump cut editing is an edit to a single sequential shot that makes the action appear to leap forward in time. After the cut, the subject may appear to be in a different position or the camera position may be slightly different.

This style of editing is effective as it is short, snappy and therefore keeps the audience's attention. It makes any scene or sequence feel very active, interesting, sometimes even intense, so it's good for catching attention, however should not be used excessively in film as otherwise storytelling can be almost impossible as the audience may feel overwhelmed or disorientated.

Therefore, the best way to use jump cut editing in film is sporadically throughout when it is required and can add effect.

Filming

When filming it is important that the composition of the shots look good.

Much like in photography,

having too many objects in a shot could create a messy scene and draw the viewers focus away from the main subject of the video. Other things to consider could be the rule of thirds,

lighting and making sure the focus of the camera is on the right things.

Getting different angles of the subject is also important as it can make a recording more immersive and attention grabbing.
